Salome, the daughter of Herodias and Herod Philip. Her mother would remarry Herod Antipas. The preacher John the Baptist had condemned this marriage and this was put in prison. to give his birthday Herod Antipas promised Salome what they wanted when they danced for him. Her mother Herodias put her to the head of John the Baptist to ask for a dish. Reluctantly, Herod kept his promise. After the dance, the severed head was brought in on a platter. New Testament, Matthew 14: 6-11; Mark 6: 14-29. Salomé is presented here as an oriental princess. She looks away from the dish in her hands, which she will give to her mother. The head of John the Baptist lies in a pool of blood on the dish and covered with a white cloth, which nevertheless clearly shows the contours of his face.
